Hall Lane Poll Dorset Flock - The Flock

Our initial flock of 50 ewes and a tup, Blackhill Champion were purchased from Jim Dufosee, to provide us with some lambs for the children to enjoy during our Nativity Play events in the run up to Christmas. However, we soon caught the pedigree showing bug, our first success being a 2nd in the ewe lamb class at the Yorkshire show in 2004.

This success encouraged us to ‘do the job properly’ so over the last 5 years we have become both M.V. accredited and Signet recorded. This recording has benefited our stock selection to the point where we have seen our Sire Index rise from 143 to 270 points over the period, with a 50 point rise in Maternal Index. This places us in the top 25% of recorded flocks in the country. We now have over 125 ewes to put to the tups at the end of June 2011 plus 100 ewe lambs retained from our own November/December lambing. 2010 May Fair purchase Ballytaggert Nyjinski, along with our home bred Hall Lane Lancelot and Hall Lane Premier, will share most of the work getting our ewes in lamb this year. Work is perhaps not quite the right word to use - 'mixing business with pleasure' might be a better phrase!

Future aims – short term to become 100% Group 1 genotype, longer term – the continued enhancement of the performance and conformation of the flock. Winning the flock competition and selling a tup for 5,000 guineas would be good for morale too!!

L13 Hall Lane Lancelot, Champion Male at Stafford 2010, with very good conformation and top 1% maternal index, plus top 25% sire index. Used as a stock tup this year.

N389 Hall Lane Nice One. Supreme Champion at Stafford 2011.

2009 Ewe lambs placed 2nd in their class in the 2009 Flock Competition

Ballytaggert Nyjinski, purchased at May Fair 2010 as one of champion pair and used a stock tup this year. To quote Thomas Wright - "Nyjinski is the best ram lamb I have ever brought to May Fair". He now has a terminal sire index of 402 - top 1% in the breed.
