Hall Lane Poll Dorset Flock - The Land
The land extends to 125 acres, most of which is either long term leys or permanent pasture, although some 20 acres is woodland. Most of it is classified as disadvantaged or severely disadvantaged and is in a high rainfall area. The land runs up to the edge of the Peak District Moors and National Park, the ground is heavy, the fields small and are entirely cut off from the farmstead. Because of this, the ewes and lambs stay inside post lambing. The ewes are weaned at 7-8 weeks and turned out once they have recovered sufficiently to withstand the weather. The weaned slaughter lambs are creep fed inside until they are ready to market. 15 ram lambs and most of the ewe lambs are retained and 'run on' to either be sold for breeding, or as our own flock replacements. These are moved outside as weather and grass growth permit, scanned at 20 weeks and then moved onto an all grass diet.
In case you were wondering, the land also carries a 140 ewe commercial pure bred Texal flock which lamb in March/April and help to keep the grass down.
